This week marked a pivotal moment in the continuing political use of America's military, as Donald Trump presented a highly partisan political address to an extraordinary assembly of top military commanders.

Alarm Bells and Strongman Rhetoric

For those concerned about democratic norms, multiple red flags emerged during the address: anti-woke language typical on the political right, threats to remove generals who dissent, and transparent pleasure about using armed services for internal law enforcement.

The confidential nature surrounding this unusual meeting of military leaders, some of whom were called back from overseas deployments, sparked speculation about possible significant shifts in defense strategy.

Substance Versus Show

However, similar to many presidential events, uncertainty persists about how much of the gathering was genuine policy versus made-for-TV drama.

After a confidential summons to about 800 top defense leaders worldwide, the president and his defense secretary presented a 10-point directive covering topics ranging from urban military deployment to complaints about military leadership.

"The Democrats run most of the cities that are in bad shape," Trump stated. "What they've done to San Francisco, the Windy City, NYC, Los Angeles, they're dangerous locations and we will fix them one by one."

Armed Forces as Internal Tool

Clear messages emerged: that the military serves at Trump's discretion, and that their new direction involves internal use rather than overseas missions.

"It's a war from within," Trump added. At another point he suggested that American cities should serve as "practice areas" for armed forces activities.

Culture War Battles and Military Culture

However these substantive statements were overshadowed by extended speeches focusing primarily on cultural issues and military appearance.

Prior to the president's typical political address, the defense secretary attacked diversity initiatives in rhetoric obviously intended to appeal to the president's core supporters.

"End heritage celebrations, DEI offices, dudes in dresses," Hegseth declared. "No more global warming focus. No more divisiveness, diversion or identity confusion. Like I've stated before and will say again, it's over with those nonsense."

Military Reaction and Assessment

Within military leadership, a common feeling was that it could have been more severe. Many had feared oaths of allegiance or swift removals of senior officers.

"The biggest news was what didn't occur," noted one analysis from a Washington-based think tank. "We saw no removal of military leaders, no alterations in the pledge of office, and no requirements that command staff support partisan policies."

The response among senior officers was not uniformly supportive. A senior official reportedly remarked that the meeting could have been an email, characterizing it as more of a political event than an important meeting.

Broader Context and International Worries

This event marks not the first time Trump has faced accusations of employing the military as a partisan backdrop. Similar concerns arose this summer when active-duty military personnel were present during a speech where the president criticized political opponents.

However, the recent gathering at the Virginia base was notable for its blunt approach and the involvement of senior military officials from around the world.

"The messages coming loud and clear from this government indicate they are far more comfortable with domestic armed forces use than earlier administrations," observed a military analyst from a London-based research institute.

While many of the suggested shifts remain rhetorical for the moment, global figures including religious authorities have voiced worry about the consequences of this rhetoric.
