Manchester City Three Goals to Nil The Red Devils: Hemp finds the net in City comfortable victory.

Much like bad weather tore through the northern region the previous evening, the home side swept United away at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 triumph for their manager's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their leadership claims as they strengthened their place at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for United

This outcome represented consecutive WSL losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since May 2024, leaving them seven points off the league leaders with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

United’s ability to juggle domestic and continental soccer with a limited squad has been a widely debated issue since they earned a place in the European competition. Reviewing the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would fully examine this fortitude. Regrettably for the visitors, they appeared weary all game, the landmark win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

Skinner had tried to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added freshness, although the dropping of the in-form Malard to the bench caused surprise.

City, in opposition, have fewer workload concerns. The City coach made one adjustment from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from injury.

Dominant First Half

The storm clouds started to accumulate for the United boss and his team from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the power from Manchester City whose dynamic attack controlled and pulled the visitors apart with a superb initial 45 minutes display that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

This left the home team in a commanding position and saw the visitors struggling. Before this fixture, United had let in just few in this WSL season but they disintegrated in the presence of the hosts' creative prowess.

Early Chances

The early indicators came quickly when Miedema used her strength to push Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Hemp was at the core of everything early on, exploiting the gap left by Riviere down the visitors' right side. Her deliveries were posing a threat and led to an opportunity for Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.

The Red Devils had several attacks ahead, their straightforward approach giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not challenge Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, dominated possession, teasing their opponents and trying to pull them out of their defensive shape.

Triple Strike

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A cross to the back post was nodded across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to score. It was City’s seventh headed goal of the season.

They added to their lead with another pair of goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was permitted to drive through the midfield from defense, the pitch opened up for City. The key Casparij collected the pass on the right side before sending a pinpoint low cross for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Shortly later, they had a third after a swift change in the ball saw Hemp given the room to drive a effort home from distance.

Final Period

The most obvious change came from Skinner at the interval as Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the match. Former City player Jess Park came most likely to score, rattling the post, but the away team were lacking in ideas and failed to register a solitary shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have added to their lead when a delightful Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to overcome any side who ended above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a favorable position after nine games.
