Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
