RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages leading to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
