A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
